I spend as much time as possible painting outdoors
as the temperature of light in Florida is radiant with warmth. Painting outdoors was made popular by the French
Impressionists, who were determined to capture the myriad colors of nature within the light and shadow patterns that they
studied 'en plein air'. Painting outdoors is very challenging, because in addition to working against heat, wind,
bugs and exposure, in order to capture that special lighted moment a painter needs to apply the paint very
quickly. Painting en plein air is usually done "alla prima", or in one sitting. This is also very difficult
because it is easy to create muddy colors when blending pigments on top of each other while painting wet into wet. As
a colorist, I detest muddy colors and hence there is always the challenge for me to keep my colors vibrant and pure.
The following paintings were all painted on location, some with a brush, and some with palette knife only.
